Here's what I do...
I take from many different parenting philosophies because the answer to many parenting questions is, "it depends." It depends on the kid's temperament, your temperament, their age, how much sleep they got this week, whether they're hungry, whether their banana broke in half, etc. Sometimes a major parenting pain point can be solved with the simplest of ideas. (have you tried a timer?) Other times you will uncover deep emotional wounds that your children have simply stumbled upon. What a simple problem is now shaking the core of your beliefs about yourself. This is all normal and is part of the journey. I’m here to support you.
And here's how I do it...
Parenting is so much more than following the books
01
Child Development
When working with small children, it’s really useful to have an understanding of their current development. This allows you to have reasonable expectations for their understanding and behavior. I’ll teach you what’s going on with your child’s brain at each stage and help you understand how that affects your interactions with them. For example, we expect a baby to cry when they're hungry but feel frustrated when a toddler does the same thing.
02
Discipline and Behavior
The goal of positive discipline is to teach your child how to live peacefully within the family and society without shame, guilt, or control. Some examples of positive discipline techniques include special time, routine charts, and use of timers. Behavior is your child's way of communicating what they need to learn. We will go deeper than behavior management and uncover the need beneath the behavior.
03
Relationships and Attachment
The most important part of parenting your individual child is building the relationship between you and them. This relationship forms the basis for all of their future relationships and creates the safety net that supports them the rest of their lives (this is why they come home from school and let all their frustrations out on you!). No matter the age of your child, I will guide you in nurturing that relationship above anything else. I promise this will be the ticket to many of your parenting successes.
04
Self-Care, Village Building, and Resources
Intensive parenting is now seen as a public health crisis and self-care is touted as the cure. But self-care looks different for each person and family and I can help you find what will actually fill your bucket. A major part of that is creating a supportive village around you, even when you may not have family around to help with child-rearing. I will help you discover or uncover the network all around you. I will also connect you with local resources, parenting resources, and other support systems.
Services
Our work together should fit into your lifestyle and budget. I offer a range of services that can be tailored to you. Here are my current offerings. I currently serve Castro Valley and surrounding areas like San Leandro, Hayward, Oakland, Dublin, and San Ramon.
Introductory Session
In this 30 minute introductory call, we will discuss your goals for your family. I want to know about your life, culture, and current pain points. Together we will decide if my services would suit your needs. You should come away from this call with one tool, tip, or piece of advice to practice that can help you get started today!
Introductory consultations are free and conducted via phone.
Parenting Coaching Sessions
Our work is collaborative. You are the expert on your child, family, home, culture, and (maybe) yourself. I know research and best practices and so we will work together to find solutions that work within your family system. First we will set goals (do you want to have calmer mornings? Are you having trouble with bedtime? Would you like to have more fun as a family?) and then I will give you actionable tools to try each session. We will evaluate how they work for your kids (every kid is different!) and try, try again.

Coaching sessions are $125/hr* and located anywhere (your home, over coffee, in the redwoods). Coaching is usually a long-term journey but we will go session by session with no commitment.**
Observations
Observations allow me into your home to see in real time how your family is interacting and how the routines are working. This is the best way for me to learn about your family's interactions and give specific advice.

Observations are $125/hr and are best paired with a coaching session immediately following the observation.
Group Classes
If you have a group of parents interested in forming a group class, I will custom create a curriculum that covers your child's age group and your group's questions. Examples include Toddler 101 (tantrums, potty training, behaviors) or a more specific group class could cover Toddler Tantrums for the whole session. The group classes usually consist of a workshop + problem-solving sessions.

Group classes are priced according to the number of participants with a minimum of 2. They take place in your home.
Support Groups
Support groups are coming soon.

* My current rate is charged per hour, prorated. I believe that the information I have to share should be available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. In that case, I offer a sliding scale payment. Please send me an email at jamie@compassroseparenting.com to discuss.
** One session may be enough to put a bandaid on a problem but parenting is a journey of growth and change and takes time and commitment. I will not lock you into a number of sessions but will definitely recommend weekly or biweekly sessions as we collaborate.
